The Foundations of Wellbeing

"Why do I feel like crap when I eat so well and exercise daily? Life's not fair!"

Does that statement resonate with you?

From the moment we get up to when our heads hit the pillow, we're constantly go-go-go (aside from when in savasana in our yoga class) and it's not hard to feel like despite everything you do, wellness just isn't on the cards for you.

Personally I think we sometimes confuse wellness with fitness.

In particular aesthetic fitness, which no longer is confided to the cover of magazines, but there's a constant influx right in your palm, 24/7.

To me, wellness is so much more than just what you eat and how you train.

It's also far more than having a six pack, and I'd like to challenge how you think by introducing you to what I'd like to call the pillars of wellness.

First off though I'll define what wellness means to me.

Wellness is....

Feeling happy and positive about life in the present moment...

Excited about the future...

Feeling energetic and able to tackle the everyday...

Eating without guilt....

Moving mindfully...

Being aware of you...

Feeling strong....

Being kind to yourself and others...

Wellness is not....

Counting everything in your life....

Eating according to calories or macros....

Feeling stressed....

Being more concerned with the way you look than how you feel....

Punishing with exercise and having guilt foods....

Restless sleep....

Eating too much or too little....

Only focusing on diet and fitness...

Only seeing the negatives....

Which column do you identify with the most? We can all fall in and out of the two but hopefully you'll spend the majority of your time in the first one.

There are five different layers that this meaning of wellness lies on:

Here's the crux - they're exactly in that proportion of importance.

Most of us neglect the first three and solely focus on the top two, when we should be doing the opposite.

When I do private work with a client I usually do a questionnaire with them to help guide me to which area it really is that they should be working on.

A person may come to me wanting to switch up their diet as they're feeling low on energy, when in reality it's their stress levels that we need to be working on.

Over the next couple of weeks I will go through different ways to become aware of which ones you're lacking in and how to improve your standing in each of them.

Namaste!
